Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has witnessed a meteoric drop in his status ever since Unai Emery has taken charge at the club.
The German star was awarded a bumper new contract in January 2017, but things have gone downhill from there. Arsene Wenger left the club at the end of the season, and Emery came in – and since then, a lot has changed at the North London club.
Ozil has failed to secure a place in Emery’s plans, and this season, he has been vastly ignored by his manager. The German was not even involved in the matchday squad for the recent away game against Manchester United. Ahead of the game, Emery admitted that Ozil was not selected because he didn’t fit into his plans.
It is believed that Ozil’s Arsenal career is all-but-over, but the North London club are finding it difficult to sell him because of his hefty wages. He was linked with an exit in the summer but ended up staying with the club. However, according to the latest report, Arsenal intend to shift their highest-earning player in January.
Daily Mail claimed that Arsenal would be willing to loan out Ozil in the winter window even if they have to subsidize his wages. The 30-year-old currently earns £300,000-a-week wages, and his contract doesn’t expire until 2021.
New deals for the striker duo
Meanwhile, the Gunners have already started negotiations over a new deal for star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gabonese striker currently earns around £200,000/week, but the new deal would take significantly closer to Ozil’s figures.
Aubameyang has been single-handedly carrying Arsenal in Premier League this season and has already scored seven league goals. Arsenal have also started working on a new contract for their other striker – Alexandre Lacazette.
Arsenal scouts at Anfield for the Champions League fixture
Another report has linked Arsenal with Red Bull Salzburg youngster Dominik Szoboszlai. The Daily Mirror has claimed that Arsenal scouts would be present at Anfield to watch over the youngster when his side play the Reds in a Champions League tie on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old is already a Hungary international and he has scored eight goals in 31 games for the Austrian side. Reportedly, Serie A champions Juventus are also keeping a tab on Szoboszlai.
Arsenal target available for cheap?
Arsenal were interested in a summer move for RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, and they even made a bid for him.
However, their £55m bid was deemed low by the German club, and the Gunners ended up signing David Luiz from Chelsea. According to reports in France, the French defender currently has a £72m release clause in his contract. However, L’Equipe has claimed that this release clause will be reduced to around £54m in 2020.
The Gunners are expected to go back for the 20-year-old next summer, and a reduced price tag would only strengthen their resolve to get their target.
