There has been a clear shift in direction of Manchester United’s transfer policy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian manager prefers to have British talent in his squad, and this was very much evident in United’s transfer policy during the summer.

The Red Devils signed three British players in Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James during the summer and all three of them have made a positive impact during the opening weeks.

United have got a lot of transfers wrong in recent years, and they have wasted a lot of money on non-British signings such as Alexis Sanchez, Fred and more. Even Paul Pogba has failed to justify his price tag since his move in 2016. Hence, it is definitely an encouraging sign to see United finally getting the value for their money in the market.

Sancho and Maddison on the menu?

Now, according to the latest report from ESPN, United intend to stick to this transfer philosophy in upcoming transfer windows. The report states that Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho and Leicester City number 10 James Maddison currently feature at the top of United’s wish-list.

It is public news that United actively pursued Sancho during the summer. However, Dortmund were not ready to sell their prized asset. The Red Devils have not given up and they intend to resume their pursuit once the transfer market opens up again. The 19-year-old enjoyed his breakthrough season in 2018-19 as he scored 12 goals in 34 Bundesliga appearances. He has started the ongoing season in the same vein and has already scored a couple of goals in three Bundesliga games. However, the England international won’t come cheap, and United might have to break their transfer record to secure his services.

James Maddison has proved to be a revelation for the Foxes since joining them from Norwich City in 2018. He made the jump from the Championship to Premier League last season but never looked out of place. The 22-year-old was a constant feature in the Leicester line up and ended the season with seven goals in 36 league appearances.

He has emerged as one of the best players in his playing position in Premier League, and it is no surprise that United are after his services. According to the report, United expect the 22-year-old to cost between £70m and £80m.

Other British players linked with United

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is another name that has caught the fancy of Solskjaer. The Red Devils were linked with the 21-year-old throughout the summer, but in the end, they couldn’t match Newcastle’s valuation of the player. Regardless, Longstaff is still very much on United’s agenda, and a future move for his services in the future can’t be ruled out.

Furthermore, United have also been linked with the likes of Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson and Stoke City centre-back Nathan Collins.
