Norwich City forward Teemu Pukki and Burnley striker Ashley Barnes are among the six nominees for the first Player of the Month award of the ongoing Premier League season.
Besides these two, Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino and Manchester City triumvirate Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne have also been nominated for the accolade of the best Premier League player in the month of August.
A look at the nomination list
Finnish player Pukki has arguably been the biggest surprise for Premier League fans in August. The 29-year-old, who had never played in Premier League previously, scored five goals in four games for the Canaries. His most impressive performance came in the 3-1 win over Newcastle United. The Finnish striker single-handedly earned three valuable points for his side by scoring a hat-trick.
Pukki was also on target in the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool on the opening day, and he continued his streak by scoring a goal and providing an assist in the 2-3 defeat to Chelsea. The Canaries currently sit second-from-bottom with just three points.
The Norwich striker is joined by Barnes, who has scored four goals for the Clarets in four appearances this season. Burnley have picked up four points from their four games, and it can be argued that Barnes has been responsible for every point earned by Sean Dyche’s side.
On the opening weekend, Barnes’ brace helped Burnley to a 3-0 win over Southampton. He also found the net in the 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, his strike against Arsenal proved to be futile as Burnley succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.
Nevertheless, it is Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero who is the favourite to win the August award. The Argentine striker scored six goals and provided one assist in four PL appearances. He has scored in each of City’s PL game so far, including braces in wins over Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion.
He is joined by Sterling, who has managed five goals so far this season. The England international scored a hat-trick in the opening-day 5-0 win over West Ham United. Kevin de Bruyne hasn’t matched his teammates on the goal-scoring charts. However, he led the assists-chart with five assists in August. The Belgian star also scored a goal in the 4-0 home win over Brighton.
Liverpool are leading the league table with a perfect record after their first four games. However, only one of their players could make the nomination list. Surprisingly it was Roberto Firmino, and not Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane, who was the top-performing player for the Reds in August. The Brazilian forward scored two goals and provided two assists during the month of August.
