Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has publicly expressed his frustration at the lack of playing time this season.
The 31-year-old, who joined from Chelsea for £40m in 2017, hasn’t been favoured by manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in the opening weeks of the season.
Matic has only played for 89 minutes during the first five games of the season. And he made his first start in the 1-0 win over Leicester City over the weekend. As things stand, Matic finds himself behind youngster Scott McTominay in the pecking order. Furthermore, he was only included in the starting eleven against the Foxes due to an injury to Paul Pogba.
The Serbia international had expressed his dissatisfaction over his limited playing time during the international break. His comments seemed to put the blame on Solksjaer for the lack of United’s title challenge this season.
These comments also prompted a response from the manager himself during the past week. Without being confrontational, the Norwegian boss said: “There’s always pressure when you’re here. But, of course, I’m confident in what we’re doing, we’ve got a plan, and the performances haven’t told me that we need to change direction.”
And now, Matic has reiterated his views. He said: “Of course, it has been frustrating. I want to play, I always give my best for the team.
“The coach is the man who picks the team and when you are on the bench you are not happy, but I am trying to convince him to change his mind and pick me to play.”
Matic has now publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with Solskjaer’s team-selection twice in quick succession and it appears that all is not well behind the scenes.
An exit on the cards?
It remains to be seen whether the midfielder would push for a January exit. However, reports emanating from Italy have claimed that a number of Serie A sides are monitoring his situation.
According to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, both Inter and AC Milan are monitoring Matic’s situation at the club.
The Sun has also added Juventus’ name to the mix by claiming that Italian champions are looking to sign him on a free transfer. The Turin club were originally interested in signing Pogba, but it appears they have shifted their focus towards his teammate. Matic’s deal with the Red Devils runs until 2020, but United have an option to extend the deal by an additional year.
United planning a bid for Kroos?
Manchester United might be planning a significant bid for Real Madrid midfielder Tony Kroos, according to reports in Germany.
Famous German publication Bild has claimed that the Red Devils are prepared to offer €75m(£66.9m) for the services of the Germany international.
However, Real Madrid are still interested in Paul Pogba, and they intend to use United’s interest in Kroos as leverage to get their man. The Spanish giants plan to involve both players in a potential swap deal. And it appears that this transfer saga would drag on for some time before reaching its conclusion.
