When Anthony Martial joined Manchester United from Monaco for an initial fee of £36 million in 2015, he was touted to become the next superstar at the club.

He was the recipient of the prestigious Golden Boy award in the same year, and at just 19 years of age, he had already established himself in the Monaco squad.

Living up to his reputation, he enjoyed a fine first season in Premier League and managed to 11 goals in Premier League. However, since then, it went downhill for him as he suffered for form under Jose Mourinho.

There were also rumours linking with an exit, but he was given a second opportunity at United with the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It can be argued that no other United player has benefitted as much with the arrival of the Norwegian manager.

Last season, Martial reached double-digits in league goals only for the second time in his United career. The French striker has made a fine start to the new season and has scored three goals in his five league appearances.

He was on target in both of United’s opening games in Premier League – a 4-0 home win over Chelsea and a 1-1 draw at Wolves. However, a hamstring injury forced him to miss football for almost a couple of months, and it was no surprise that United suffered a terrible dip in form during this period. In fact, United’s performances were so poor that were backed to miss the top-six by many pundits.

However, Martial’s return has seemed to breathe a new life into United’s campaign. The 23-year-old was on target from the spot as United won their Europa League tie at Partizan Belgrade last week. Regardless, it was Martial’s goal-scoring performance in the 3-1 win at Norwich City which was the source of new-found optimism for United fans.

The Red Devils hadn’t won an away game in Premier League since February, and they were expected to struggle against Norwich City. However, United produced arguably their best performance in weeks as they comfortably dispatched the Canaries. United had struggled to find the net in the recent weeks, and it was no surprise that their return to form coincided with Martial’s return from his injury.

The above statistic further prove how important Martial is to United’s ambitions this season. And if can manage to stay fit for the rest of the season, United might have a say in the race for the top-four. Which was unimaginable only a couple of weeks back.
